Dragondrame Dreamworks
Dragondrame Dreamworks is an Emberstonian coachbuilder and manufacturer of roadgoing portable homes based in Mistwood. Founded by Stanley Dragondrame and Bianca Dragondrame, the company grew from a private four-car garage into one of Emberstone's best-known builders of vehicles intended not merely for travel, but for living. Dragondrame does not manufacture its own basic automotive platforms. Instead, it works closely with the Rolling River Carriage Company, using proven RRCC vehicles, chassis, engines and mechanical systems as the foundations for purpose-built portable homes. Its products range from relatively simple Lynx Wagon conversions to immense luxury mobile residences. The company became particularly associated with the growth of Emberstone's Traveller culture, frontier settlement and, later, the National Dividend. For many Emberstonians, a Dragondrame is not regarded as a recreational vehicle but quite literally as a portable home: a means of travelling, working or settling without giving up a secure private residence. Founding Dragondrame Dreamworks was founded by Stanley Dragondrame, with Bianca Dragondrame providing much of the company's business management, organization and customer-facing work. The Dragondrames were not nobles, but neither were they impoverished entrepreneurs beginning with nothing. They owned a modest amount of land in Mistwood and had sufficient private means to begin the business properly. Their large four-car garage became Dragondrame's first workshop. The company's earliest vehicles were practical conversions of RRCC Lynx Wagons. These were intended for people who travelled for work, lived seasonally on the road, hunted far from settled areas or simply wanted to remain mobile without living out of a tent. Those early conversions established the design principles that continued to shape Dragondrame products as the company expanded: reliability was not to be sacrificed for comfort, unnecessary structural alteration was avoided, vehicle weight was treated seriously, and anything built for frontier use had to remain serviceable far from a major workshop. Relationship with RRCC Dragondrame Dreamworks is closely associated with the Rolling River Carriage Company, but it is not an RRCC subsidiary. RRCC provides the mechanical foundation of Dragondrame products. Depending on the class, this may mean a complete production vehicle for conversion or a collection of chassis, drivetrain, suspension, axle and engine components around which Dragondrame constructs an entirely new body. Dragondrame in turn specializes in the habitation side of the vehicle: coachwork, interiors, seating and sleeping systems, insulation, weather sealing, storage, kitchens, water systems, lighting, heating and the various mechanical compromises required to make a vehicle genuinely livable. Before Dragondrame obtained Charter recognition, it purchased RRCC products in much the same manner as any other substantial commercial customer. Charter status later produced closer technical coordination and more formal supply arrangements, particularly where major drivetrain changes were concerned. Dragondrame's approach to modification is summarized by an internal maxim: <<< Upgrade systems, not just parts. <<< The company will not install an engine whose output exceeds what the surrounding cooling system, transmission, brakes, suspension and driveline can safely support. Customers requesting major increases in performance are expected to accept the supporting work required to make the resulting vehicle reliable. Charter status Dragondrame was not founded by the Crown and did not begin with funding from Masdrin De'Endar. It became successful as an independent private company before Charter recognition was proposed. By that point, Dragondrame portable homes had become increasingly significant to civilian mobility, settlement and emergency preparedness. Masdrin invested during the Charter negotiations rather than at the company's creation, providing additional capital and access while receiving a commercial return from an already proven enterprise. Charter status did not convert Dragondrame into a Crown corporation or grant it a legal monopoly. The company remained privately operated, and other firms remained free to build competing portable homes. In ordinary times, Charter recognition gives Dragondrame easier access to Crown contracts, major procurement opportunities and closer coordination with suppliers such as RRCC. During national emergencies it also creates obligations. Crown crisis orders receive priority and are supplied under standardized cost-plus-one-percent terms, although normal civilian business may continue so long as those priority obligations are being fulfilled. Portable homes Within Emberstone, Dragondrame vehicles are normally described as portable homes rather than campers or recreational vehicles. The term is deliberately broad. A portable home may be a lightly converted wagon used by a young Traveller, a bespoke touring vehicle for a family or survey crew, a luxury expedition residence for a noble, or an enormous mobile estate capable of supporting long-duration travel in considerable comfort. Portable homes are used by settlers, Travellers, hunters, merchants, soldiers and veterans, surveyors, seasonal workers, frontier families and wealthy citizens who simply prefer to take their home with them. For some owners, mobile living is temporary. A young Emberstonian may travel for several years before purchasing land, founding a Shire or settling into a permanent community. Others remain Travellers for most or all of their lives. Design philosophy Despite the wide difference between its smallest and largest vehicles, Dragondrame applies several common principles across its range. Weight and reliability Dragondrame does not attempt to make every platform perform the work of the next class upward. A Trail Wanderer remains a Lynx-based vehicle. A Trail Trekker remains a Fox-based portable home. A Trail Cruiser remains a Ranger-class machine. This distinction protects the vehicles from the common failures of badly designed conversions: overheated engines, damaged clutches and transmissions, broken suspension components, poor braking and excessive structural weight. Even the largest Dragondrame vehicles are expected to remain machines that can actually travel rather than static houses that happen to have wheels. Serviceability Portable-home owners may spend weeks or months away from a fully equipped shop. Dragondrame therefore favours accessible mechanical spaces, replaceable hardware, standardized fasteners, removable components and compatibility with ordinary RRCC service practices. Luxury does not excuse building something that cannot be repaired. Secure Storage Every Dragondrame portable home includes some form of Secure Storage : a reinforced, lockable compartment built into the vehicle structure rather than simply placed inside it. The company officially describes the feature in general terms as storage for valuables and long items. Compartments are commonly sized in a manner useful for owners carrying longarms, although Dragondrame does not advertise them specifically as weapon lockers. The intent is to provide storage that cannot simply be carried away or pried open by a casual thief. Product range Dragondrame's principal portable-home classes form a progression from lightly converted production vehicles to purpose-built mobile residences. | Class | Mechanical basis | General role | |Trail Wanderer |RRCC Lynx Wagon |Light and relatively affordable portable home | |Trail Trekker |RRCC Fox |Purpose-built mid-range travelling home | |Trail Cruiser |RRCC Ranger |Luxury expedition portable home | |Trail Estate |Heavy bespoke coach |Grand-touring portable estate | Trail Wanderer The Trail Wanderer is Dragondrame's smallest and least expensive major portable-home class. It is built by converting an existing RRCC Lynx Wagon without fundamentally altering the vehicle's structure. Dragondrame does not chop the roof, remove major structural supports or attempt to disguise the Lynx as a larger class of vehicle. Instead, the existing interior is reorganized around fold-flat sleeping space, storage and removable or semi-removable habitation modules. Cooking is generally handled through a rear galley. The rear of the Lynx is opened and used with an awning or shelter rather than burdening the vehicle with a large enclosed kitchen and the ventilation, weight and complexity that would accompany it. Light Wanderers can remain within the capabilities of four-cylinder Lynx models, while heavier configurations are better suited to stronger engines, gearing, cooling and suspension. Dragondrame will perform major powertrain conversions when requested, but only as complete supporting upgrades rather than isolated engine swaps. The Wanderer is particularly popular with young Travellers, couples, hunters, seasonal workers and former soldiers who want a secure mobile home without paying for a fully bespoke vehicle. It is sometimes jokingly described as a glorified tent. Owners are generally quick to point out that it is a dry, lockable, four-wheel-drive tent. Trail Trekker The Trail Trekker is Dragondrame's first fully purpose-built portable-home class. Rather than converting the body of an existing vehicle, Dragondrame uses the major mechanical systems of the RRCC Fox Pick-Em-Up and builds its own habitation body around them. This gives the company considerably more freedom in interior layout while retaining the proven drivetrain and service network of a common RRCC platform. A Trekker commonly includes extensive windows, swivel front seating, a pop-up sleeping area, proper interior seating, improved insulation and substantially better integration of water and storage than a Wanderer. Although based on full-sized truck mechanicals, the finished vehicle resembles a purpose-built travelling van more than a pickup carrying a removable camper. The Fox platform also allows stronger engines and greater habitation weight. V6 and V8 power is common, with more elaborate high-end configurations possible when the surrounding systems are upgraded accordingly. The Trekker is popular among experienced Travellers, small families, survey parties, touring professionals and buyers who want a true portable home without moving into the cost and scale of a Trail Cruiser. Trail Cruiser The Trail Cruiser is Dragondrame's luxury expedition portable home. It is constructed from RRCC Ranger mechanical components rather than by cutting apart a completed production Ranger. Dragondrame receives the appropriate frame, drivetrain, suspension, axles and engine systems and constructs a bespoke body suited to long-duration habitation. Cruisers are designed for people who expect to remain mobile without depending heavily upon local infrastructure. They are common among wealthy Travellers, nobles overseeing distant holdings, survey leaders, officers, hunters and expedition parties. Many Cruisers use a short-nose or bubble-nose layout that provides greater interior volume and a commanding driving position without turning the vehicle into a commercial lorry. The cab is connected to the main habitation body through a flexible weather-sealed pass-through, allowing controlled movement between the two structures as the chassis flexes over uneven ground. V8 power is common, while V12 configurations represent the upper end of normal Cruiser production. Dragondrame does not ordinarily attempt to turn the Cruiser into an RRCC Dragon merely for the sake of possessing a larger engine. A Trail Cruiser is expensive enough that ownership generally implies considerable private wealth or institutional backing, but its prestige derives as much from genuine capability as from luxury. Trail Estate The Trail Estate sits above the Trail Cruiser as Dragondrame Dreamworks' largest and most elaborate class of portable home. Unlike the off-road-oriented Cruiser, the Estate is conceived primarily as a grand-touring mobile residence: an exceptionally large roadgoing home intended for owners who expect to travel for extended periods without giving up the space, privacy or amenities of a substantial permanent residence. The Estate takes the form of a very long four-axle coach with tandem axle groups at both the front and rear. Its body uses a split-level arrangement inspired by large touring coaches. Much of the principal living and working space occupies the lower main body, while the raised section provides additional sleeping and observation space with extensive glazing. Conventional luggage and equipment are carried in large underfloor storage bays between the axle groups, leaving the occupied portions of the coach free for living space. Trail Estates use a twin-V8 bio-electric hybrid drivetrain as standard. The hybrid system originated as experimental RRCC technology, and the Estate was among the platforms on which it was tested and proven before the arrangement became normal for the class. The twin-engine layout provides the electrical generation and road power expected of so large a mobile residence while also giving the vehicle a useful degree of redundancy. The Estate is not intended merely as a larger Cruiser. A Cruiser remains an expedition vehicle capable of difficult terrain and remote operation. The Estate instead emphasizes sustained road travel, living space, comfort and the ability to function as a genuine travelling household. Because of their scale and cost, Trail Estates are uncommon even by Dragondrame standards and are associated primarily with exceptionally wealthy Travellers, major nobles and institutions requiring a mobile residence of unusual size. Masdrin's Magnificent Mobile Mansion The best-known Trail Estate is Masdrin De'Endar's heavily customized example, commonly known as Masdrin's Magnificent Mobile Mansion . Masdrin's vehicle combines the functions of a luxurious travelling residence and a mobile command headquarters. Its lower spaces provide working, meeting and living areas, while the raised glass-roofed portion contains sleeping and observation space. The vehicle's dark exterior and extensive glazing make it visually distinctive even among other Trail Estates. Masdrin also uses portable holes to supplement the vehicle's ordinary baggage storage. These are not a Dragondrame feature and are not part of Trail Estate design. They are Masdrin's personal magical equipment, used to remove heavy or sensitive cargo from the physical load carried by the vehicle and, characteristically, stored folded inside his hat when not in use. The Mobile Mansion therefore should not be treated as a standard specification for the Trail Estate class. It is a conventional Trail Estate only at its mechanical foundation; much of what makes it famous reflects Masdrin's own modifications and intended use. Trade-ins and second-hand vehicles Dragondrame prefers trade-ins where practical. Taking an older Dragondrame vehicle back through the company allows its workshops to inspect the base platform, remove questionable modifications, replace worn components and place the vehicle back on the market with a known mechanical history. A Trail Wanderer traded toward a Trekker, for example, may be refurbished and sold to a new owner entering the portable-home market for the first time. The resulting second-hand market helps prevent Dragondrame ownership from becoming exclusively the preserve of wealthy buyers and extends the useful life of vehicles built around serviceable RRCC mechanical systems. Cultural role Dragondrame Dreamworks became closely associated with the idea that mobility does not need to mean rootlessness. Its vehicles allow an Emberstonian to carry a secure private living space across the country rather than choosing between permanent settlement and rough travel. A Traveller can work seasonally, visit family, follow trade, explore new regions or spend years on the road while still returning each night to their own bed and possessions. The rise of the National Dividend significantly broadened the number of citizens able to consider such a life. For some young Emberstonians, a portable home became an alternative to immediately purchasing a fixed residence. For settlers and new Domain founders, the same vehicles provided useful accommodation while permanent buildings were constructed. Portable homes also fit comfortably within Emberstone's broader culture of individual capability. They are private homes, workshops, shelters and transport in one package, allowing owners to remain independent without requiring them to remain isolated. Wartime and emergency use Dragondrame is civilian in origin, but portable homes possess obvious value during war and disaster. Depending on their class and configuration, they may serve as temporary accommodation, field offices, communications spaces, medical-support vehicles, staff quarters or mobile planning facilities. Trail Cruisers and Trail Estates are particularly useful where senior personnel require both living and working space away from permanent infrastructure. As a Charter company, Dragondrame may be directed to prioritize Crown emergency orders under its cost-plus-one-percent crisis terms. Existing civilian contracts are not simply erased, and ordinary commercial work can continue so long as Crown priority production is being met. This arrangement reflects the broader purpose of Dragondrame's Charter: the company remains a private enterprise in ordinary life, but an enterprise whose industrial capacity can be called upon rapidly when Emberstone requires it. Legacy Dragondrame Dreamworks helped turn mobile living in Emberstone from a rough expedient into a respectable and, at its upper end, luxurious way of life. Its reputation rests less on novelty than on the idea that a portable home must remain both halves of its name. It must be comfortable enough to live in, but still reliable enough to move. From a young Traveller sleeping in a converted Lynx to Masdrin conducting national business from an enormous Trail Estate, the underlying promise is the same: home does not necessarily have to stay in one place.
